I am planning to explore why the work of Diane Arbus is criticized while similar work by Diego Velazquez is characterized as sensitive. I believe that Arbus’ work is criticized because it stirs up a level of discomfort. This paper will give me an opportunity to further explore the idea of self, the gaze, and otherness. Now if I could just find the actual criticism of Arbus’ work and not just mention of it!
